Purely Saskatchewan Made Handcrafted White Birch Utensils

by elequant bushman on January 18th, 2012 at 5:41 pm
Posted In: Uncategorized

This little set of handcrafted utensils includes

one mega-sized spoon hand-carved from pure

Saskatchewan White Birch perfect for soups,

     stews, stir-frying or a barbaric old-school

substitute for beating students with straps,

     rulers and meter-sticks!*

For the more savage of beatings when you really wanna pound the flesh to pure pulp I have taken natural hand-peeled White Birch to complete an absolutely kool looking medium & large pair of really effective meat tenderizers perfect for crappy cuts of steak or pork tenderloin deep fried cutlets.  Again built from purely Saskatchewan grown wood with a natural look this set is completely food safe and finished with an all-natural mineral oil.

The small tenderizer is 13 inches in length, while the large is 15 inches.

The spoon is a slightly different story, cut from whats referred to as “figured” wood, this sucker is polished to a super-smooth finish finer than the bottoms it was once the tool of choice for parents everywhere who wished you’d  “smarten yo ass up!”  Although it does not do the look justice the backdrop to this blog is “figured” Trembling Aspen and may give you a sense of the beautiful shimmering look of the natural layered growth pattern of these Saskatchewan hardwoods.

I will be building a few of these sets on order, at least until I run out of properly cured leftover wood suitable for making these 3 piece White Birch Utensil sets and similar works.  If you’d like to purchase a set they are >>>listed for sale<<< over on 7 monkeys  which is just a safe and incredibly easy to use platform for buying and selling of local services and outsourcing.

*content strictly for entertainment and reflection on past accepted standards.  These utensils are purely intended for either ornamental use or use in the preparation of food.  RusticSavage.com is not responsible for any misuse of this or any product.

RusticSavage 2012 Updates

by elequant bushman on January 4th, 2012 at 12:33 pm
Posted In: Global

No huge plans for the blog for 2012. Updates have been quite few and far between as I have been busy working on several projects and business has been driven largely by word of mouth to date.

I have a few small things I am planning to work on & will be updating on those as complete, just some helpful little items like conservative & practical usages for shop leftovers that would normally be considered waste and so on, no timeline for any of those plans yet though..

I will be more focused on bigger projects for the most part, once spring rolls around I have a major backyard project that will commence and is going to be so uniquely awesome you if you have ANY interest in the outdoors lifestyle and your own backyard paradise you will want to stay tuned for that.. however the project as it sits right now being the middle of winter is months away from completion & depended on funding & locating the right resources it may be a few years before actual completion. This being said the project will be a functional recreational space at various stages of construction so look for something in the manner of step by step updates (subscribe to the form on the left for immediate notification of completed works!)

Getting back to future plans of this blog, it is a spare time side project of which as far as I am concerned I have YEARS to develop.. so if my updates are a little far and few between you’ll just have to bear with me…

All the best for 2012 and beyond!

Field Stone Fire Pit

..and he said, “build it like ya just described, but square.”
I said, OK.

At last the long awaited pics of my latest project! This natural field stone semi-enclosed yet open fire-pit contains upwards of 90 stones, held in place through the awesome power of the once-controversial force of gravity & completed with a “special” mortar mix intended to last a lifetime. Constructed with material local to the Saskatchewan Parkland region, these stones were picked near the Marean Lake area, weigh a friggin ton and are sure to withstand a tornado.

not the mona lisa, but..
“Only since the cave-dwelling days of our ancestors has mankind been drawn to the warmth of beauty of a natural open pit fire. We may not all have been partial to veggies but you can be damn sure any human with the slightest bit of primal instinct has placed meat over fire in the ultimate feast of the best damn food nature has to offer, period.” Dancing naked around the fire is strictly optional.

Environment & Sustainable Living

by elequant bushman on August 17th, 2011 at 7:01 pm

We here at rusticsavage tend to crave the finer side of life and naturally maintain a keen interest in nature and preservation of what our home planet has to offer in it’s magnificent ever-changing beauty, splendor, mystery and awe-inspiring greatness.

We endorse products that are all natural down to the finish, harvested in a sustainable fashion and that are not removed from protected wilderness areas.

Some would say that harvesting any wood product from our forest-lands is wrong and harmful to the environment, that our rustic creations are stealing from nature and we should not be disturbing precious Eco-systems. What these people fail to recognize is products such as wood are carbon based products, and essentially stored carbon once turned into furnishing that could last for centuries to come. This simply equates to stored carbon that is not released into our environment!

You see, Protecting the environment is about more than denouncing a current manner in which things are done. It’s about getting your facts straight and not buying an electric car that due to it’s type of battery leaves a bigger environmental footprint than some gas job!

At rustic savage we are committed to making informed decisions in all that we do, we believe in a future of self-sustained living, and, that we all need to do our part to preserve life and all nature has to offer, for all generations to come.
